Nuthatch nesting at Headstone Manor......
This morning I am working with a group of volunteer students at a small wood near the school. They have been plqanting trees, clearing litter and putting up nest boxes. One of the best things about the project has been the discovery of a pair of nuthatches nesting in an old oak in the heart of suburban Harrow...not a rare species but certainly scarce in such a setting away from more extensive woodland. The nest hole was very well concealed but displayed the characteristic mud lining of the entrance applied by this species to make it just the right size for a nuthatch and nothing larger.
