Stormcock

Woke up this morning to the sound of a mistle thrush. They are early nesters and are renowned for singing prior to rain....rather appropriate considering the weather conditions today.

The Fast Show Badger Watch

As a teacher it is very difficult to avoid the colds that afflict our students and along our corridor it has felt at times like being on a hospital ward this week. Talking all day takes a toll on the throat and I have felt like some of my students have had to sit through a Bob Flemming sketch.

Corncrake in song.

Whipsnade and Corncrake Conservation

Corncrake panto....it's behind you!

Not the greatest quality video I have ever taken, but this was my first face to face encounter with a corncrake. It was completely unexpected, coming as it did on a stroll on the last day of a summer holiday in Hungary a couple of years ago. It was a very hot day and it was the mid-afternoon lull when everything seems to go a bit quiet. I had explored some old meadows and had just turned around to walk back when I got an urge to look behind me....that old 'something's watching you' feeling and there it was, in the middle of the path. After a lifetime of waiting, there it was standing out in the open. By the time I got the camera steady it had started to drift back towards cover. I still need to hear one call, so I may take a trip to the Ouse Washes in Cambridgeshire this Summer.
